Can You Make My Blog Look Like Hers?

I get the question all the time from bloggers who are unhappy with their theme ….”Can you make my blog look like that???” My answer is sometimes: Yes and sometimes: No. Sometimes the blog design desired is a template that is easily acquired for free or purchased. In that case the answer is “Yes” …easy peasy.

Sometimes the blog design that my clients covet (like this one!) has been modified to death by the blogger themselves, and we would need to design that template from scratch. It is certainly not impossible, but it is one of the more detailed projects we take on here at Blog Fix. Our specialty is upgrades and tweaks.

Should I upgrade to Wordpress 2.5?

Question markI get this question all the time …should I upgrade to this new latest and greatest version? Normally, I would say “Yes, you should be running the latest version of wordpress to protect yourself from the spammers out there in the world”.

However, this time I am saying:
“Maybe”

I run about 20 blogs and I consider myself an expert with wordpress. Currently, I have upgraded about half of my blog stash and I am leaving the balance at version 2.3.3 (which is safe from any security holes) …if you are running a version lower that 2.3.3 …HIRE ME QUICK!!! …seriously….There are some crazy people who could do mean things to your blog.

All of my 2.5 upgrades have NOT gone smoothly. Plugins don’t often work. …and many plugins will need to be upgraded. So, if you are going to attempt it…don’t even think about starting the project when you are the least bit tired and cranky.

Have you looked at your blog in every browser?

I remember the day last summer, I happened to be on my old dell laptop …the one I only use for about an hour a day …usually to read email over my morning coffee. For some reason, I was drawn to check something out on my blog…. and what did I see? Horrors!! The columns were all screwy and overlapping each other and it was barely legible. At first, I thought I had been hacked!! ..but when I calmed down I realized it was just IE 6. You see, my blog looked perfectly fine in Firefox and IE 7 …but with IE6 (which happened to be 28% of my readers) my blog looked completely and utterly broken. So let that be a lesson to you my blog readers ….your blog may look fine in one browser or two browsers …but does it look right in ALL browsers????

Make Your Blog Sing!

Wendy from over at eMoms writes a revealing post about her $1150.00 business cards — youwch! But she makes some awesome points:

Today, you might not ever do any business in person, and you might not even have a business card. But you have a website, a blog, or a profile somewhere like Elance or Freelance Nation. You have more opportunities to get a “Wow” from a potential customer than ever before. But are you still on BlogSpot? Is your headshot taken in a bar? Did you throw together a profile on a freelance marketplace site and say to yourself, “I’ll get back to it when I have more time”?

You might not probably will never know what business you have lost if you can say yes to any of the above. And maybe you haven’t ‘lost’ any business at all. But I can tell you that if you had a website, portfolio, blog, or profile that made people say “Wow” in the first 2 seconds, then you will get more business.
